I forgot it was about sport
|Caroline Crampton||May 21, 2018|
My apologies that this Sunday playlist is arriving on a Monday; it is now less than ten days to my book deadline and I’m finding it hard to remember what day it is. Anyway, here are three sport podcasts that I, a non sport person, have enjoyed, and hope you will too.
Burn It All Down
When I say that this podcast is so good I forgot it was about sport, I mean that as a compliment. The five hosts — who are academics, journalists and activists — discuss things like motherhood for athletes, #metoo allegations, and activism among sports stars (eg Colin Kaepernick and others). Among the many things I like about the way they talk, I’m a big fan of how they refer to the big football event in Russia this summer as “the men’s world cup”. Start with this recent episode about a new Serena Williams documentary and find more at burnitalldownpod.com.
Black Girls Talk Sports
This show ranges across lots of different sports, rather than sticking to one, which as a non fan I appreciate. Rekaya Gibson is an excellent host, and of late I’ve enjoyed her coverage of the Winter Olympics, diversity in mountain biking (not all cyclists are famous white men who may or may not have done some doping, who knew) and, um, wines made by athletes. Those Stories, Plus. . .
I can’t help it, OK? I am a sucker for Aaron Sorkin’s less good, cancelled work. As previously discussed in this newsletter, I also really enjoy an episode-by-episode TV recap podcast. So here’s a great one of the sadly short-lived TV show Sports Night, made by two very enthusiastic super fans. Find out more at thosestoriespod.podbean.com.
That’s all for today. If you’re enjoying being a subscriber, do me a favour and tell a friend who might like to become one too (podmail.substack.com/subscribe is the link to share). This whole enterprise relies on your goodwill, for which I’m very grateful.
